Fixed-term electricity contract and moving

Do you have a fixed-term electricity contract for your current home? When you move, you need to terminate a fixed-term contract even if you have time left on your contract. 

Usually, a fixed-term electricity contract binds both the buyer and the seller for the entire contract period, but moving is an exception. When you move, you need to terminate your fixed-term electricity contract.

If you want a fixed-term electricity contract for your new home, you can select a new one.

Fixed-term electricity contracts

Electricity contract when moving – remember these! 

1. Make a new electricity contract in advance

When can you order a new electricity contract? At Hehku, we recommend ordering an electricity contract for your new home as soon as you know your moving date. You can sign a contract up to 90 days before your moving date, so you can take care of it well in advance. The contract must be signed no later than two working days before moving.

2. Terminate your old contract

Terminate the electricity contract for your old address. Your Hehku electricity contract does not move with you to your new home; electricity contracts are always address-specific. When terminating your contract, specify the final date of the contract. Please note that you can choose the termination date to be no earlier than five (5) days from the current date.

By terminating the electricity contract for your old address in advance, you make sure you do not end up paying unnecessarily for the next resident’s electricity consumption. Moving house is an exceptional circumstance that also allows you to terminate a fixed-term contract before the end of its term.

3. What if you are moving tomorrow?

Don’t panic. If you forgot to arrange an electricity contract and the moving van is already outside, call our customer service directly at 09 6898 8780. We will help you get your electricity connected as quickly as possible.

Please note, however, that we charge a fee for an expedited electricity connection in accordance with our service price list. Your local distribution network operator may also charge a separate fee for an expedited connection in accordance with its own service price list.

An expedited electricity connection for the same day is only possible on weekdays and is most likely to be successful if you contact us before 12 noon. The connection schedule depends on your local distribution network operator and its schedule. Unfortunately, we at Hehku cannot speed up the connection process.

4. What happens if you don't terminate your old contract?

If you do not terminate your old electricity contract, it will remain in effect until the new resident of your old home takes out an electricity contract for the address. This means that you are responsible for paying the electricity bills for your old contract if you have not terminated it. However, once the new resident takes out an electricity contract, your old contract will end automatically.

A fixed-term electricity contract can also be terminated when you move house.

Take care of your electricity contract and enjoy a smooth move

When moving, remember two important things: order an electricity contract for your new home in advance and terminate the contract for your old home at the same time. Take care of your electricity contract at least a week before moving, so you don't have to rush at the last minute.
